Small business welcomes new pooled pensions: Success up to provinces, financial institutions

TORONTO, June 28, 2012 /CNW/ - The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) welcomed today's announcement that legislation for Pooled Registered Pension Plans (PRPPs) has been given Royal Assent.

"PRPPs will be an excellent addition to the retirement savings options for small business owners and their employees," said CFIB's new president Dan Kelly. "Small firms tell us that the main reasons 80 per cent of them do not have any form of company retirement plan for the business owner or their employees are the costs and administrative burden of offering a plan. If properly implemented by provinces and financial institutions, we expect PRPPs to move the ball forward on both fronts," Kelly added.

"Current pension plans are beyond the reach of most entrepreneurs and company Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs) quickly become unaffordable as employers must pay payroll taxes like Employment Insurance, Canadian Pension Plan (CPP)/Quebec Pension Plan (QPP) and workers' compensation premiums on top of any contributions to the plan," said Kelly. "PRPPs, with no payroll taxes and lower administration fees, should allow more firms to put more money aside for retirement," Kelly added.

CFIB is calling on provinces to move quickly to implement the legislation and to ensure that PRPPs remain entirely voluntary. "While Quebec has already introduced legislation to move forward, CFIB is very disappointed Ontario intends to block small firms from accessing this improved retirement tool for workers," Kelly said. "CFIB will be monitoring financial institutions to ensure administration fees are significantly lower than current RRSPs."

"Brand new CFIB member data reveals that a full third of small firms would consider offering a PRPP in their workplace," Kelly added. "For our part, we at CFIB are currently examining ways to offer PRPPs to our 109,000 small business members across Canada."

CFIB is also urging Finance Ministers to shelve any plans to increase CPP/QPP premiums at this time. New CFIB survey data shows that over a third of small firms would be forced to freeze or reduce employee pay and/or cut investment in their firm to accommodate a CPP/QPP hike.

As Canada's largest association of small- and medium-sized businesses, CFIB is Powered by Entrepreneurs™. TELUS breaks ground on world-leading Kamloops Data Centre

$

KAMLOOPS, BC, June 29, 2012 /CNW/ - TELUS today broke ground for construction of its Kamloops Internet Data Centre. Once complete in July 2013, the facility will draw upon green hydro power, natural cooling and other technology to be one of the most environmentally sustainable, secure and reliable operations of its kind in the world.

The site will use up to 80 per cent less power than a typical data centre of its size and is designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold standard.

The new facility will be a cornerstone of TELUS' next-generation cloud computing solutions, giving clients a competitive edge by allowing them to focus on their core business knowing their data is effectively stored in one of the greenest and most secure data centres anywhere.

"I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincere gratitude to the City of Kamloops, the Kamloops School District, the Province of British Columbia and our TELUS team in the Thompson Okanagan for their support of our investment," said Darren Entwistle, TELUS President and CEO. "Our Kamloops Data Centre will offer unsurpassed connectivity, superior functionality, state-of-the art security and industry-leading reliability for our clients, whilst creating 200 construction jobs and 75 long-term skilled technical jobs in the community."

"High-tech facilities like TELUS' Internet Data Centre in Kamloops are critically important to British Columbia's economic growth and I want to thank TELUS for this important investment in our province," said B.C. Premier Christy Clark. "TELUS will create 75 permanent jobs you can raise a family on while continuing our province's legacy of environmental stewardship. TELUS is already our province's largest private employer, and we are pleased they continue to see B.C. as a place to expand their business."

The Kamloops data centre has been designed modularly, allowing TELUS to steadily increase the space for technical equipment and tailor services to meet the changing information technology and storage needs of clients, including small businesses, large corporations and government bodies. Once all seven modules are ultimately complete, including the centre's administrative offices, the facility will cover 215,000 square feet.

Throughout the project, TELUS will consult with multiple partners experienced in the design and construction of such specialized facilities around the world. To support the local economy and improve onsite coordination during construction, TELUS will work with local companies where possible.

Adopting the LEED rating system for new buildings is part of TELUS' commitment to reducing environmental impact across its operations. TELUS conducted a thorough review of many potential properties in B.C. communities and after careful evaluation selected Kamloops because of features that will make the facility one of the greenest and most effective data centres in the world - low earthquake risk, access to TELUS' network and clean power, a climate suited to environmentally-sound cooling, and access to a skilled workforce.

Similar to TELUS' Rimouski Data Centre that will open in September of 2012, this data centre will have an annual Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) rating of 1.15, meaning it will use up to 80 per cent less power than an average facility of its size. A key element of the data centre's efficient design is an advanced system to cool the servers that takes advantage of Kamloops' natural low humidity to draw in outside air, allowing the facility to consume 86 per cent less water for cooling than typical data centres.

"We recognize that people want to work for and with organisations that take an interest in their community, and in keeping with the values of the TELUS brand we put an emphasis on environmental sustainability right from the initial planning stages of this project," said Mr. Entwistle. "This will truly be a facility in its own class, a visible symbol of TELUS' focus on corporate social responsibility and deep commitment to our brand promise, the future is friendly."

In addition to the $75 million data centre, TELUS will invest $25 million in Kamloops over the next three years to expand 4G LTE - the fastest wireless technology in the world - to the community and bring Optik TV to even more neighbourhoods.

TELUS' commitment to Kamloops extends beyond sustainable employment and investments in critical infrastructure. Through a unique fundraising program, TELUS is contributing $425,000 to the Royal Inland Hospital's ICU capital campaign, as a result of donating $100 on behalf of every new Optik TV and smartphone customer in the community. A similar program raised $125,000 for the North Shore Kamloops Library Computer Lab. Since 2000, TELUS, its team members and retirees in Kamloops have donated more than $1.2 million and volunteered nearly 80,000 hours to local charitable and community organizations.

In addition, the TELUS Thompson Okanagan Community Board, launched in September 2011, is making a significant impact in Kamloops and surrounding communities. By year-end, the Board will have donated $400,000 to community projects and initiatives that help educate, support and empower children and youth to realize their full potential.

Cyclobus | the Summer Bus and Bike Duo! - Installation of bike racks on STL buses

$

LAVAL, QC, July 20, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - Starting today, Laval cyclists will be able to combine bus and bike to save time and cover longer distances when commuting to and from work or travelling back and forth for leisure activities, thanks to Cyclobus, a system of bicycle racks that are easy to use and free of charge.

This brand new service will be available gradually during the month of July on the buses along the 60 route all summer long, with a bike rack, which can accommodate up to two bicycles, installed on the front of each bus. This bus line has been chosen due to the fact that it is so well located, reaching the City's major arteries in addition to many of Laval residents' popular destinations—such as Centre Laval, the Centropolis and Carrefour Laval as well as Saint-Martin and Des Laurentides boulevards. The 60 bus line also leads to east-west bicycle paths and to Cartier and Montmorency metro stations, where bicycles are allowed aboard the first two metro cars.

Bike racks will be installed on all STL buses next year, to meet the needs in greater and greater demand by many people wanting to combine the two methods in order to optimize their transportation routine and improve their quality of life in a number of ways. Bike racks will be available May 1 - October 31, depending on periods of use, which will vary based on sunrise and sunset times. Their use will also be subject to certain conditions that will be explained on the STL's website.

"The installation of bike racks on STL buses is in keeping with our objective of helping Laval residents better manage their mobility and cut down on single-occupancy vehicle use, through alternate means of transportation. The bus-and-bike duo is a winning combination for those who want to keep fit, while adopting a fast, reliable, economical way of getting around," pointed out Guy Picard, the STL's General Manager. "More and more carriers around the world are increasingly accommodating cyclists and, from now on, the STL is among them."

As it may be recalled, 46% of Laval's cycling network is completely separate from the roadway and 42% extends along a roadside bicycle lane. In addition, both the east-west and north-south sections are almost totally paved and accessible to cyclists.

Further information on the procedures for using Cyclobus bike racks may be found on the STL's website (www.stl.laval.qc.ca) or by phoning the Customer Contact Centre at 450 688-6520.

The STL, facts and figures

  • The STL operates over 20 million runs annually.
  • The STL has rolled out its STLSynchro system, which informs transit users, in real time, about bus schedules and progress along the routes.
  • The overhaul of its bus network, made necessary by the extension of the metro to Laval, has given rise to a 32% increase in service, faster trips, more direct bus routes and a greater frequency of buses outside rush hours, on evenings and weekends on 12 routes.
  • The STL has also joined forces with the Association québécoise de lutte contre la pollution atmosphérique, Communauto and the Carpooling Network, to promote sustainable transportation in Laval.
  • The fare policy is particularly designed to encourage families to use public transit: All adults paying their fare on weekends and holidays may be accompanied, free of charge, by up to five children age 11 and under. This policy also applies to every day in the summer, July 1 - Labour Day. In addition, the STL's $1 fares on summer smog days are a first in Québec.
  • All vehicles on its fleet use biodiesel B5.
  • The STL is registered on Twitter and has its own Facebook page, where it announces service notices.
  • The STL offers riders the opportunity to register on MySTL to receive notices on the bus routes that they usually take.
  • Since the roll-out, in 2009, of its vehicle scheduling control system, the STL's on-time performance has been on the rise, to over 92%.
  • The STL has received a number of awards of distinction, including one from the AQTR in 2010: the Grand Prix for excellence in mass transit, positioning it as an outstanding corporation.
  • In 2011, the STL is prize winner of AQTR best communication advertising campain for its Smog Alert Program.
  • In 2011, the STL undertook a feasibility study to examine the viability of implementing an aerial tramway (gondola service) on its territory. This study is an additional project over and above the measures in the Sustainable Mobility Plan. The steps being taken in this regard are supported by Ville de Laval, the Agence métropolitaine de transport and Hydro-Québec.
  • A new program—STL Sustainable Mobility Solution—was launched in May 2012. This program is designed for organizations concerned with finding ways of more efficiently managing their employees' commuting.
  • In May 2012, the STL was honoured with the 2012 Corporate Leadership Award in the Innovation category, for its CLIC carpooling project with electric vehicles.

Kelowna, B.C. - Accelerate Okanagan has announced the launch of the second annual “Jump:Start:Challenge” for Okanagan technology companies.

Launched to support technology companies and entrepreneurs seeking to raise investment to finance their growth, Accelerate Okanagan’s Jump:Start:Challenge is an “investor-ready” pitch competition.

An investment pitch is a 10 minute presentation made to potential investors telling them what they need to know to decide whether or not to consider investing in a company or idea.

Entrants to the Jump:Start:Challenge will be invited to present their pitches at an open forum to be held on September 11th, 2012 at the Jim Pattison Centre of Excellence located at the Penticton campus of Okanagan College for an opportunity to be selected as a top 10 finalist and entrance into the program.

The 10 program participants will receive eight weeks of expert training, coaching and mentorship including exclusive pitch workshop training sessions to improve their “pitches” and increase their chances of raising capital.

Five finalists will then present their business ideas to pre-selected members of the technology investment communities in Vancouver and the Okanagan.

Awards packages for the top three companies – to be decided by a select group of judges from the investment community - will include free office space at Accelerate Okanagan’s Kelowna or Penticton Innovation Centre’s and enrollment in the Venture Acceleration Program, which helps high potential technology companies accelerate their growth and maximize their opportunity.

Rob Bartlett, CEO of WTFast and the winner of Jump:Start:Challenge 2011, said, "I found the Jump:Start:Challenge invaluable - it's like a boot camp for companies looking for investment. You will learn what investors are looking for and how to present. Along the way you will learn more about your company and ways to improve it. Thanks to AO and this program I have gone from never pitching before in my life to now pitching to investors in Vancouver, California and Seattle."

StreetText took third place in Jump:Start:Challenge 2011. Stephen Whiting, Director at StreetText said, “Jump:Start was very important to our company for two main reasons. First it helped us further believe in our opportunity by validating it through the mentorship process and through the practice pitches and final presentations. And secondly, it helped reshape our team mindset. Jump:Start made us analyse every angle of our project from financing, sales, time to market, scalability etc. forcing us to ask hard questions that streamlined the company.”

Jeff Keen, CEO of Accelerate Okanagan said, “After the success of last year’s program, we are excited to identify and work with the next group of new hot technology companies in the Okanagan. After 8 weeks of intensive coaching and mentorship the successful companies will have a much deeper understanding of their business opportunity and will have dramatically improved their chances of raising capital.”

Entrants to the Challenge should e-mail a short description of their business concept to jumpstart@accelerateokanagan.com or tweet it to @accelerateok by September 4th, 2012.

When completed, the new managed mobility offering featuring the SAP mobile platform will be made available to customers through a Rogers-branded managed mobility service. A first between SAP and a Canadian wireless carrier, the offering is being designed to help simplify the way organizations mobilize their workforce, by helping employees gain real-time access to enterprise mobile applications on tablets and smartphones that traditionally sit on desktop computers.

"Canadian organizations are rapidly adopting new wireless solutions to serve a growing mobile workforce and to enable mobile business processes," said Tony Olvet, group vice president of research at IDC Canada. "IDC's research shows that 36 percent of Canadian organizations have already mobilized one or more application and 21 percent are pilot testing mobile apps this year. Deploying and managing mobile enterprise applications and device solutions are increasingly strategic elements of business strategy."

By the end of 2011 there were approximately 2.4 million tablet devices in Canada according to IDC Canada. IDC additionally forecasts the worldwide mobile enterprise application platform global market to grow to more than US $3.0 billion in 2015.

"Businesses are transforming their IT resources to stay competitive and the four walls of the office are now transparent - anytime, anywhere access to mobile enterprise applications and software on any device is essential for efficiency and workforce productivity," said Larry Baldachin, senior vice president, Business Segment, Rogers Communications. "By pairing the strength of our wireless network from continuous investments with SAP solutions, we will enable public and private sector customers with a solution to truly mobilize."

Customers would benefit from a managed mobility service that lowers entry cost, speeds time to implement and extends the value of mobile enterprise applications by making them accessible from anywhere at any time, decreasing the strain on resources to maintain on-premise deployments. Within the agreement, Rogers plans to manage hosting services and provide wireless connectivity to power SAP solutions, including:

  • Enterprise mobile applications: Customers will have access to business, industry and analytics enterprise mobility applications from SAP.
  • Development: Business customers can access to the SAP mobile platform for enterprise mobile application development on proven, industry-leading technology. Kelowna, B.C. - Accelerate Okanagan  Venture Acceleration Program Company, Orcamax Business Solutions, has secured funding from the NRC Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP) to develop infrastructure for full scale multi tenant commercialization of their web based scheduling application.

Launched on May 1st 2012 in Kelowna, BC, Orcamax Business Solutions creates work life balance for service contractors through innovation, creativity and thought leadership.

Robert Ducharme, CEO of Orcamax said, "This is another great step forward for the company. Reaching this milestone really validates what we are doing. We saw the market opportunity and went for it."

Previously a Landscaper, Robert saw a space in the market for a scheduling software tool that would help trade organizations and service providers. He and his team developed software that targets trades such as window cleaners, plumbers, maid services, carpet cleaners and more. Its geographic system enables profitable customer interactive schedules while reducing long hours through improving scheduling and route optimization.

Contractors from anywhere in the world can easily and simply implement the Orcamax solution. Once functional, contractors can potentially save up to $3000 per month by reducing their costs related to administration, labour and fuel. The system also allows one or two extra bookings per day and reduces cancellations.

Securing the IRAP funding further legitimises what Robert and his team are doing. "We are really excited about securing the funding and the future of Orcamax” said Robert, stating that scalability and setting up new users in a secure and efficient way has been a challenge. He adds that with this funding, they can address the problem, and assist companies in getting up-and-running within minutes.

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 30, 2012) - Electrovaya Inc. (TSX:EFL) today announced the introduction of the PowerPad 600. With an enormous 600 Watt hour energy storage capacity, the PowerPad 600 is an ideal replacement for existing lead acid and low energy density Lithium-Ion batteries used in Hospitals, Construction sites, Warehouses, Telecommunications, Retail, Standby Power and wherever mobile power is required. The PowerPad 600 extends the PowerPad family of products and is in addition to the existing PowerPad 130.

Electrovaya's high-energy Lithium-Ion SuperPolymer® advanced rechargeable battery technology provides leading-edge power solutions for the world's most demanding applications. They are designed for safety and reliability with multiple layers of redundancies to meet the requirements for healthcare, automotive, grid and consumer applications.

"We intend to give the healthcare market more energy capacity than ever before, in a smaller space, such that mission critical healthcare applications never suffer from a lack of power," says Ashis Basu, Marketing Manager Electrovaya.

The PowerPad 600 uses Electrovaya's proprietary Lithium-Ion SuperPolymer® battery technology which has up to 50% higher energy density than phosphate with comparable safety performance.

Hospitals in the US and Canada are implementing Electronic Medical Records (EMR) as a priority. Collection of data at the point of care is a key component of EMR requiring mobile power for extended periods of time demonstrating "meaningful use" of technology.

The PowerPad 600 is compatible with many laptops and with desktops, thin client and all-in-one computers. With its long cycle life, the PowerPad 600 has a lower cost of ownership than Sealed Lead Acid batteries and is virtually maintenance free.

"Recent initiatives by health-care organizations, medical professionals and government agencies to increase the use of technology within the health-care industry make this an ideal time to launch this exciting new PowerPad, which is based on Electrovaya's proprietary, unique and leading-edge technology." says Ashis Basu, Electrovaya's Marketing manager. "This PowerPad 600 is the natural evolution of the proven PowerPad 130 and has nearly five times increased energy capacity along with an intelligent battery management system."

MONTREAL, July 31, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - TAG taxi TM, a free iPhone application that lets you order a taxi in a simple, personalized way, is launched today in Trois-Rivières. At a time when urban transportation is an increasingly important issue, TAG (Taxi Assigned by Geolocation) offers citizens the opportunity to commute how they want to, as well as a chance for the taxi industry to modernize its customer service. After its success in Montreal last May, TAG taxi TM.

"For us, Trois-Rivières was a natural," explains Patrick Gagné. TAG taxi™ president. "The entrepreneurial spirit which drives the region, as well as its university's extended campus, both make it an ideal market for a service such as ours."

With just a few taps on an iPhone, from anywhere in Trois-Rivières, the user can order a cab and specify the desired method of payment, or whether room is needed to transport oversized luggage or pets. Most importantly, the application allows the user to rate the ride, namely the driver's courtesy and driving, as well as the car's cleanliness.

"What we offer taxi companies is a new way to reach their clients. We put the user at the heart of the taxi experience. We offer a new service to order taxis, which allows for feedback and gives people the possibility to have their say. The TAG taxi™ application becomes a travel-mate for the urbanite in his or her daily commute and a chance to enrich that experience."

With TAG taxi™, the cab takes back its rightful place in the multi-platform urban transportation menu. Getting around becomes an easy thing. The taxi is complementary to public transit options and proves to be a valid alternative mode of shared transportation.

Taxi Coop de la Mauricie becomes a new TAG taxi TM partner

The application eases the process of requests, which means we can offer our clients high quality service. So, everybody wins.
