TORONTO, May 22, 2012 /CNW/ - Just in time for the unofficial start of cottage season, Hydro One's free mobile app is now available for download on smartphone and tablet devices allowing customers to check the status of power outages anywhere in Hydro One's service area.

"Hydro One customers asked for this capability and we listened," said Laura Formusa, President and CEO of Hydro One. "By giving customers mobile access to check on power outages, we give them the information they need in a way they want to receive it."

Hydro One's free mobile app puts an interactive outage map that's updated every 15 minutes in the palm of customer's hands anytime, anywhere.

The map displays both planned and unplanned outages and is searchable by address. If there is a power outage, crew status, estimated time of power restoration and cause, if known, are displayed. Customers will also get the latest news from Hydro One delivered directly to their device.

To download the app, just search "Hydro One" on your smartphone or tablet's application store.

Hydro One delivers electricity safely, reliably and responsibly to homes and businesses across the province of Ontario and owns and operates Ontario's 29,000 km high-voltage transmission network that delivers electricity to large industrial customers and municipal utilities, and a 121,000 km low-voltage distribution system that serves about 1.4 million end-use customers and smaller municipal utilities in the province. Hydro One is wholly owned by the Province of Ontario.

Health and Safety Information App for Apple devices - for Canadians

TORONTO, May 24, 2012 /CNW/ - Today, Health & Safety Watch introduced a new app for Apple devices to help Canadians stay on top of recalls, advisories and health warnings. Health & Safety Watch designed the app to provide a simple point of reference for users to check everything from boil water advisories and local disease outbreaks to consumer product and food recalls.

With over 1000 recalls and advisories each year, it is difficult to keep up-to-date, especially during the busy summer months when Canadians travel more and are less likely to be tuned into the news.

"For Canadians heading to cottages and campgrounds and hitting the highways for a good old-fashioned road trip this summer, it's important to have up-to-date health and safety information," says Dr. Jeff Aramini, President of Health & Safety Watch. "Our app makes this quick and easy. Everything can change very rapidly - for example a destination that had safe drinking water when you left on your road trip, may actually be under a boil water advisory by the time you arrive."

The free app, which is based on the Healthandandsafetywatch.com website, aggregates information from various government sources on a variety of topics including product, food and drug recalls, as well as, public health and environmental advisories. A geo-tagging and ranking system enables the app to provide the most relevant and local information to users based on their current location. Category and city search functions also enable users to search coast-to-coast based on their preferences, travel itinerary and interests.

In addition, the app provides local public health inspection results for restaurants in Toronto. This feature lists the establishment's current status and outlines any recent infractions. Health & Safety Watch will be expanding this offering to include other communities in the coming months.

"A quick search of the restaurant name enables users to see the status and any infractions that may impact their decision to eat there," Aramini says. "It's great when planning a night out because you have all of this information at your fingertips, without having to first visit the restaurant and read the inspection notice."

About Health & Safety Watch Inc. Health & Safety Watch Inc. is a science and technology-based organization dedicated to helping Canadians get the most up-to-date and accurate information on all types of health and safety recalls, warnings, and advisories. Information is event-based, with each health and safety issue managed as a single occurrence so visitors can easily find the most recent, accurate updates. Geo-location mapping technology ties each event to a specific location in Canada making it easy to identify where an event is occurring. In addition to the website and smartphone apps, several other products and services are in development. Health & Safety Watch Inc. was established in 2009, the website www.healthandsafetywatch.com was launched in 2010. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter @hswtweet.

OTTAWA, June 1, 2012 /CNW/ - TELUS will invest $210 million in Ottawa-Gatineau over the next three years to further expand TELUS' 4G LTE network to the community, using the fastest wireless technology in the world.

"TELUS is investing in technology because having the best services and solutions in the market is absolutely essential to our customers in the National Capital Region," said Joe Natale, TELUS' Chief Commercial Officer. "For them, technology isn't a luxury: it's the foundation of communication, education and collaboration for their businesses, and for their personal lives. Today's announcement of our strong financial commitment to strengthening the technology platform here speaks to our resolute commitment to our Ottawa-based customers. We are deeply grateful to be of service."

TELUS' investments will also result in the hiring of 80 people in Ottawa and Gatineau in 2012 to support its wireless growth.

TELUS' commitment also extends to supporting local charities and community organizations. As part of our commitment to give where we live, TELUS is hosting today a series of community workshops to educate not-for-profit organizations on how to provide the safest environment for youth in partnership with the Canadian Centre of Child Protection, BackCheck, the Ottawa Police, the Ottawa Citizen and Sheldon Kennedy, a former NHL player who has publically shared his own story of childhood abuse. The workshops will focus on helping Ottawa organizations take a proactive approach to protecting children in their care. As part of its commitment to supporting local charities, TELUS presented a cheque to the Centre of Child Protection for $185,000.

"There is a symbiotic relationship between the success of business and the health of our communities," Mr. Natale said. "At TELUS, we recognize that it's a partnership. As our company benefits from a strong, loyal base of consumers and customers, we have an inherent obligation to return that loyalty by helping forge richer and fuller communities. Today's event with the Canadian Centre of Child Protection is one of many examples of sharing our spirit of innovation and support in Ottawa. Tremendous good can be done when we all care enough to contribute."

Since 2000, TELUS and our more than 640 team members and retirees here in the Ottawa-Gatineau region will have contributed more than $11 million to local charities and community organizations by year-end through Team TELUS Charitable Giving and more importantly, TELUS Ottawa and Gatineau Team Members have helped support countless charities and community organizations including The Ottawa Mission, the Children's Hospital Of Eastern Ontario and the Ottawa Food Bank.

In addition, the TELUS Ottawa Community Board has contributed $3.3 million to 204 charities including Youth Services Bureau of Ottawa, South East Ottawa Community Health Centre and the Ottawa Art Gallery since its inception in 2005. Moreover, in 2012, the Board will donate an additional $400,000 to local grassroots charities.

TELUS' $210 million investment over the next three years will enhance and expand its 4G LTE network in Ottawa-Gatineau Region. 4G LTE is the most advanced, fastest wireless technology available in the world today. TELUS 4G LTE network supports manufacturers' rated peak download speeds of up to 75 megabits per second (Mbps), with an expected average of 12 to 25 Mbps.

The capital investment disclosed in this release is consistent with TELUS' overall capital expenditure target for 2012.

CAW Economist Debunks 'Myth' of Labour Shortage, Says True Unemployment Rate is Over 12 Per cent

$

OTTAWA/TORONTO, May 31, 2012 /CNW/ - CAW Economist Jim Stanford testified today that Canada faces years of continuing surplus labour supply, not a looming labour shortage.

Stanford appeared before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance regarding the federal government's omnibus budget bill, Bill C-38.

He tabled data showing that Canada's labour market has recovered only marginally from the worst days of the 2008-09 recession. Since July 2009, when the recession bottomed-out, the employment rate (which measures the proportion of working-age Canadians holding a job of any kind) has recovered barely one-fifth of the ground it lost during the downturn.  As of April 2012, the overall (seasonally adjusted) employment rate was 61.9 per cent, still far below the pre-recession level of 63.8 per cent, and only 0.6 points higher than the low of 61.3 per cent recorded in the summer of 2009.

"The oft-made claim that Canada's labour market has fully recovered from the recession is blatantly and empirically false," Stanford said.  "In fact, the labour market remains almost as weak as during the worst days of the downturn."

The decline in the official unemployment rate mostly reflects a decline in labour force participation by Canadians, not stronger employment conditions, he noted.

Because hundreds of thousands of non-working Canadians are excluded by definition from official unemployment statistics, the standard unemployment rate badly underestimates true unemployment, Stanford argued.  He presented the Committee with estimates of actual unemployment, which he pegged at almost 2.3 million Canadians, or over 12 percent (see table).  This captures not just those who meet the official definition of unemployment, but also the decline in labour force participation since the recession, involuntary part-time work, and workers waiting for future shifts.

"Canada continues to experience a condition of severe and chronic underutilization of our labour supply," Stanford said.  "It is simply not credible to speak of a 'labour shortage' that somehow constrains our economic growth.  This feared labour shortage is a myth invoked to justify painful and unnecessary cuts to important social programs."

"Government policies aimed at compelling labour supply (including proposals to defer Old Age Security, cut Employment Insurance benefits, and dramatically expand the Temporary Foreign Worker program) are motivated not by a labour shortage, but by a desire to suppress wages."

The omnibus budget bill would alter over 60 pieces of federal legislation, including major changes to the Old Age Security and Employment Insurance programs.

MONTREAL, May 29, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - Beginning today, May 29, and through May 31, Montreal is hosting an international symposium on the challenge of green information and communication technologies (ICT) at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The importance of successfully meeting this challenge lies in the mainly untapped opportunity of annual savings of $800 billion dollars in energy efficiency and the elimination of 15% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions.

Since 2008, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a United Nations organization, has been rallying the international ICT sector to focus on ICTs as an essential part of the solution to climate change. As a member state of ITU, Canada is the host of this seventh ITU Symposium on ICTs, the Environment and Climate Change, organized by PROMPT, an organization that stimulates university-industry R&D partnerships in information and communication technologies.

"Québec has demonstrated great leadership in promoting renewable energy and green ICTs, which constitute a growth area, from both an environmental and an economic standpoint. We believe in the potential of green ICTs and are proud to host this major event that confirms the strategic role of Québec and Montréal in their development", said Charles Despins, president of PROMPT.

"The seventh edition of this international symposium has many renowned speakers whose thoughts and observations contribute to providing solutions to climate change through ICTs. The growing popularity of this symposium is a testament to the willingness around the world to successfully meet the challenge of green ICTs, "said Malcolm Johnson, Director of the ITU Telecommunication Standardization Bureau

The Montreal Symposium, the ITU's first in North America, brings together hundreds of participants from around the globe over three days to discuss green ICT issues such as:

• Green next-generation networks

• Smart grids, smart cities

• Mitigation and adaptation to climate change

• E-waste management

• Disaster preparedness and emergency communications

• Methodologies for the environmental impact assessment of ICTs

• Challenges and opportunities in the transition to a green and resource-efficient economy.

Sensitive information recovered from electronic recycling depots in Alberta, and BC

$

CALGARY, May 29, 2012 /CNW/ - The Electronic Recycling Association of Alberta is a non profit organization, based in Calgary. The ERA has been approached by businesses and government departments across the province of Alberta, and in British Columbia.

In Alberta, the ARMA (Alberta Management Recycling Authority) operates in conjunction with municipal landfills, electronic waste collection sites.

These sites are usually poorly manned and supervised, and in many cases in very remote parts of the province.

The corporations and government departments that approached the ERA, have had their computers, laptops, servers, and event routers and switches, removed from these sites, and sold, without having their information erased. In some cases the processors that collected the equipment for recycling on behalf of ARMA have resold these items, with sensitive data inside.

In  British Columbia, Encorp Inc operates in conduction with Bottle depots, electronic waste collection sites.

These bottle depots are frequented by various scrap dealers, and operated by private owners who consider profits prior to anything else. Laptops, servers, computers and routers, delivered for recycling, that are still in working condition, have been recorded leaving the premises to private buyers. These items were then recovered by ERA and sensitive information was extracted.

The ERA is warning the public, corporations and government departments to erase their hard drives, or remove them completely before bringing them to any electronic waste collection depots. The ERA also offers mobile hard drive shredding services to guarantee total data destruction.

For more information about the companies affected, and if your corporate data might have been compromised, please contact the ERA directly. If you have dropped off your computers at any of the mentioned depots in the past 2 years, you might have been victim to data theft.

Government of Canada to test clean vehicle technologies

$

OTTAWA, May 28, 2012 /CNW/ - The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced that the Government of Canada is continuing its commitment to advance clean vehicle technologies and work with the automotive industry to make safe, clean and innovative transportation options available to Canadians.

"Our government is pleased to launch the next phase of the ecoTECHNOLOGY for Vehicles Program," said Minister Lebel. "This program will assess the safety and environmental performance of new vehicle technologies to ensure that innovations can be introduced in Canada in a safe and timely manner."

Over the next several years, the automotive industry will introduce a range of innovations to improve vehicle safety and to meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations.

The ecoTECHNOLOGY for Vehicles Program is a five-year, $38-million program that will proactively test advanced vehicle technologies to develop safety and environmental regulations, as well as industry codes and standards.  Test results will help align vehicle regulations in North America to reduce and prevent barriers to cross-border trade, lowering costs for business and consumers, and supporting jobs and economic growth.

The program builds upon a successful predecessor program with the same name, which focused on testing environmental technologies for passenger cars. The new ecoTECHNOLOGY for Vehicles Program will expand testing activities to include heavy-duty trucks and a broader range of technologies.

Funding for the program was provided in Budget 2011 as part of a suite of Clean Transportation Initiatives under the renewal of the Government of Canada's Clean Air Agenda.

The Clean Transportation Initiatives focus on aligning Canadian regulations with those in the United States and with international standards, improving the efficiency of the transportation system and advancing clean technologies.

These initiatives will help Canada achieve its economy-wide target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 17 per cent from 2005 levels by 2020.

For more information about the ecoTECHNOLOGY for Vehicles Program and test results from the predecessor program, please visit Transport Canada's website at www.tc.gc.ca/eTV.

OpenText's New Capture Center | Highest Performance, Integration with Virtually Any Backend System

$

WATERLOO, ON, May 29, 2012 /CNW/ - OpenText™ (NASDAQ: OTEX, TSX: OTC) today announced a new OpenText Capture Center software solution that allows organizations to more quickly and efficiently capture, digitize and fully index paper documents, forms and faxes, and then move them into virtually any back-end system. The new version offers several enhancements including improved precision for highly demanding recognition tasks, such as scans from mobile devices, helping users to reduce their dependence on paper-based processes and deliver business critical electronic content to corporate workflows and business processes.

Business processes that depend on paper are inherently slow and hard to manage. Seeing opportunity for rapid efficiency gains, enterprises are aggressively adopting the latest generation of advanced capture solutions such as OpenText Capture Center. As an open document capture platform, it uses optical character recognition (OCR) and intelligent document recognition (IDR) to classify documents and to extract business or index data. Once documents are collected from various sources, such as document scanners, multifunctional peripherals, file shares or email connectors, they are analyzed and delivered to a variety of backend systems from OpenText and other vendors, such as SAP and Microsoft, for further processing or placed into an archive to significantly boost storage efficiency and greatly improve records management and governance.

"While the use of digital communications continues to rapidly expand, incoming paper documents are not declining in volume and we also see increasing use of smartphones for mobile image capture," said Peter Lipps, Vice President, Capture Solutions, OpenText. "Improvements in acquiring the data from these paper assets and also advancing the technology to support documents captured by mobile devices are critical for today's businesses. Capture Center version 10.2 provides this as well as integration with any enterprise backend system, whether from OpenText or other industry-leading solution providers, through standard interfaces or our customizable application programming interface (API)."

The latest version of OpenText Capture Center has shown that it can help businesses reduce document test errors by 20 percent, providing the quality required for the most demanding applications. Capture Center includes the industry-leading OpenText OCR engine which is licensed to a wide range of OEM partners and is used throughout the industry for high demanding recognition tasks.

Mobile Capture
The new version also offers improved support for documents captured by mobile devices, which is quickly becoming an ad-hoc document scanning alternative. As the cameras deployed in these devices do not provide the same fidelity of images as document scanners, Capture Center 10.2 employs improved image handling algorithms as well as a new method for improved character recognition. This new offering builds on OpenText's advanced capture technologies and proven track record of building world-class solutions and integrates with OpenText Tempo for fast and easy file sharing and syncing from any device.

Several additional new capabilities are available within Capture Center 10.2. New user and task management allows customers to manage which user or user group should handle which document batch. It also provides fine-grained access control to prevent unauthorized access. Additional support is now available for high availability scenarios. For example, critical resources such as databases can now be individually managed and re-located. Version 10.2 also offers improved support for unattended operations. Certain scenarios require uninterrupted and unattended operation such as high volume TIFF to searchable PDF/A rendering. Improved failure recovery and a new notification mechanism in Capture Center 10.2 are helpful in this and other scenarios.

Electrical safety tips for when stormy weather hits

$
0
0

MISSISSAUGA, ON, May 29, 2012 /CNW/ - Ontario's Electrical Safety Authority is warning residents and workers in Conmee Township and the Municipality of Oliver Paipoonge to ensure that electrical equipment in your homes and businesses has not been compromised following flooding.

Electrical equipment and wiring that has been exposed to water through flooding may be dangerous if re-energized without proper evaluation and reconditioning or replacement by qualified persons.

Electrical Equipment - impacted by flood water could be unsafe, this includes the main breaker.  Power should be disconnected at the service by ensuring that the main switch is left in the "off" position until all electrical equipment has been tested.  In the event that flood water has risen above outlets, covers power cords, or is near the service panel you should contact your Local Distribution Company and arrange for them to disconnect power to your home.  Once power has been turned off or disconnected a licensed electrical contractor should be contacted to determine if electrical equipment (wires, plugs) need to be replaced.

Do not plug in or attempt to use electrical appliances that have been wet until they have been checked or serviced by a licensed electrical contractor or service agency.  Ask your contractor, or contact the manufacturer or dealer for the nearest service location.

Portable Generators - should not be connected to electrical appliances or wiring components that have been impacted by flood water.

Portable generators can cause electrical hazards if connected or used incorrectly.  Check your generator and all component parts to ensure that they have been approved by a recognized certification agency.  Portable generators that are hard wired into your electrical wiring are required to have a transfer device to protect your home and the utility system.  In addition, hardwired generator installations must be inspected by the Electrical Safety Authority to ensure they comply with Ontario Electrical Safety Code requirements.  Portable Generators should only be used in well ventilated areas. For more information on portable generator safety and certification requirements visit www.esasafe.com.

Upon returning home after a flood homeowners should stay a minimum of 35 feet away from downed powerlines and immediately report these to the Local Distribution Company.

In the event of a powerline emergency call 911 and your Local Distribution Company.

Ontario's Electrical Safety Code requires generators to be connected to a wiring system with an approved transfer device.  The device prevents Utility power from entering your home when a generator is in use; and prevents generator power from flowing back onto the Utility system.

The road to the finals
Selection committees around the country —one for each province and one for the combined territories—met to review the BDC Young Entrepreneur Award applications.  The judges looked at the quality, feasibility and relevance of the innovation project.  They also took into account the financial health of the company, its growth potential and the extent to which the project met genuine client needs.

Following are brief descriptions of the eight finalist innovation proposals:

Nova Scotia: Anchored Coffee, Zane Kelsall, 27, Two If By Sea Cafe, Dartmouth
Zane Kelsall and Two If By Sea Cafe are looking to make a difference at home and globally by opening the first roastery in Atlantic Canada to buy all of its coffee direct from farmers. This project will benefit coffee farmers, while ensuring a sustainable supply of high quality beans for the company's existing cafes and its partner network across Canada. A front-of-house coffee lab will serve as a community hub, offering tasting sessions and direct-trade seminars and courses. Vote to help Two If By Sea make a real impact!

Quebec: Sole Solution, Philippe Durocher, 34, Laboratoire Bergeron, Montreal
Laboratoire Bergeron's new approach to creating orthotics could completely change the field as we know it.  Conceived by Philippe Durocher, the patent-pending system uses a liquid resin injected into a prefabricated insole that moulds to the patient's foot and creates a less-costly, more precise, ready-made product.  The company is perfecting the system and has plans to take it to international markets.  Vote to help Laboratoire Bergeron improve the orthotics experience for patients and specialists around the world!

Ontario: A Robot with Smarts, Miguel Clement, 30, Inovatech Engineering Corp., Vankleek Hill
Miguel Clement and his team aim to expand Inovatech's line of robotic cell machines.  They plan to produce a robot that can be programmed to understand customized drawings and recognize how to make the appropriate cuts in steel beams and plates with minimal room for error.  With the unique ability to read 3-D, 2-D and bevel drawings, the Steel Pro 900 will help structural steel manufacturers increase their operational efficiency, speed and accuracy. The machine will also eliminate some of the industry's laborious and hazardous tasks and allow steel manufacturers to take on more work. Vote to give Inovatech Engineering the tools to succeed!

Manitoba: Grants with a Difference, Michael Legary, 32, Seccuris Inc., Winnipeg
Michael Legary and Seccuris Inc. plan to reinvigorate grassroots entrepreneurship across Canada by providing grants to non-profit groups known as community innovation spaces. These entities enable innovation at the local level by providing physical space and equipment that would otherwise not be available to budding entrepreneurs. The grants will help kick-start projects and create new jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities. Vote to help Seccuris reinvigorate entrepreneurship!

Saskatchewan: The Drop-in Office, Curtis Olson, 34, Shift Development Inc., Saskatoon
Curtis Olson's Shift Development team wants to provide Saskatoon's growing mobile workforce with a service that the city lacks:  flexible office space equipped with world-class technology, offices and resources. Designed for creative entrepreneurs and start-ups that don't need permanent offices, Shift's project will provide access to access to high-tech amenities and professional development programs.  Users will also benefit from proximity to an existing community of creative entrepreneurs. Vote to give Shift the power to empower Saskatoon's mobile workforce!

Alberta: A Greener Footprint, Patrick Bergevin, 35, Chinook Foot Orthotic Laboratory Inc., Calgary
Patrick Bergevin and his team at Chinook Foot Orthotic Laboratory want to redefine foot orthotics manufacturing. Their project will reduce the company's environmental footprint, and, through sales to other labs, help reduce waste across the industry. By improving the efficiency of Chinook's manufacturing systems, the project will significantly reduce waste and improve productivity. It will also replace costly composites that are prone to defects and create more resilient, lightweight orthotics. Vote to give Chinook Lab and the industry a greener footprint!

British Columbia: Star Guitars, Mike Miltimore, 35, Lee's Music, Kamloops
Mike Miltimore and his team at Lee's Music are ready to scale up their manufacturing facility and launch Riversong guitars on the market.  Their patent-pending new guitar design featuring an adjustable neck joint fixes a lot of issues related to tension and tuning that have plagued guitar players for years. The company has also streamlined the guitar manufacturing process to reduce building time from 100 to 24 hours.  Mike and his team want to continue to use local materials and further develop the business to create more jobs in their community.  Vote to give Lee's Music the fullest sound!

Northwest Territories: Arctic Fitness, Tara Newbigging, 27, Fit 2 the T, Yellowknife
By developing a strong Web presence, Tara and Fit 2 the T want to build on the fitness wave they sparked in Yellowknife and extend the same life-changing wellness benefits to other remote communities. To get people started, Tara would travel to remote areas, host workshops and use technology to provide a sustainable remote connection as well as access to online fitness tools and programs. Vote to give Fit 2 the T the tools to build wellness!

TELUS investing $650 million in Ontario over next three years

$
0

TORONTO, June 1, 2012 /CNW/ - TELUS will invest more than $650 million in advanced technology over the next three years in Ontario.

The significant investment builds on the more than $22 billion the company has invested in technology and operations in the province since 2000. It will expand and extend TELUS' 4G LTE network, using the fastest wireless technology in the world. TELUS' investments will also result in the hiring of 900 people across Ontario to support its wireless growth.

"Technology is a foundation of a stronger provincial economy," said Joe Natale, TELUS' Chief Commercial Officer. "These investments will help support growth across our wireline and wireless services, meeting the exponential demand for advanced communications technology that we see across the province, and indeed across the country. They'll improve the reach and capacity of our network for existing business customers, and consumers. And, of particular importance, they will help to connect additional rural and small communities. At the same time, hiring 900 people will help us support the future economic prosperity of Ontario."

TELUS' commitment also extends to supporting local charities and community organizations. Since 2000, TELUS' family of more than 8,000 employees and retirees in Ontario have contributed more than $39 million and, more significantly, volunteered 235,000 hours to Ontario-based charities and organizations such as The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Tree Canada, Canadian Red Cross and Free The Children. Notably, the TELUS team will contribute more than $7 million to local, grassroots community projects in 2012.

"At TELUS, we have a fundamental belief that by supporting one another, we build a stronger foundation," said Mr. Natale. "From it, better businesses are built, and more importantly, stronger communities are created. We take our work in communities across Ontario seriously, bringing the same innovation and commitment to our charitable giving and volunteer work as we do to every other facet of our business. 'We give where we live' isn't just a slogan for our team. It's an authentic expression of our caring attitude and approach."

TELUS' $650 million investment will:

  • Extend and expand TELUS' fourth generation network coverage to more than 95 per cent of people in Ontario. This year, TELUS will extend 4G LTE service to the National Capital Region, Barrie, Windsor, Muskoka, Niagara area and Kingston with more to come over the next few years if TELUS is able to secure necessary wireless spectrum through Industry Canada's upcoming spectrum auctions. 4G LTE is the most advanced, fastest wireless technology available in the world today.
  • Continue to improve delivery of drug claims services through the company's healthcare technology. In May, TELUS earned a two-year contract extension with Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care for the operation of the Health Network System, which enables pharmacies to submit drug benefit claims electronically. The extension recognizes TELUS' excellence in on-line and real time drug claims adjudication under the Ontario Public Drug Programs. TELUS' healthcare solutions enable the processing of drug claims under the OPDP, the largest, real-time online transaction processing system in the Ontario government The system settles about 125 million online real-time transactions per year from the approximately 2.2 million Ontarians using Ontario Drug Benefit claims programs.
  • Support unique community fundraising projects in Ontario. Similar programs in 2011 raised $250,000 for Junior Achievement of Canada towards a new national award for Canadian youth and $80,000 for the Canadian Beast Cancer Foundation - Ontario Region to fund clinical fellowships in breast cancer research.

The capital investment disclosed in this release is consistent with TELUS' overall capital expenditure target for 2012.

Significant New Money Growth for VC Funding required for Canada's ‘Innovation Nation’ Success

$
0
0

Ottawa, June, 05, 2011…CATAAlliance CEO, John Reid & its National Spokesperson, Sir Terry Matthews, also President & CEO of Wesley Clover released today a Venture Capital (VC) Blueprint for Canada to succeed as an Innovation Nation. The VC Blueprint reviews different mechanisms and models for urgent adoption in Canada to accelerate the success of start-ups to enterprise flagships.

Messrs Reid & Mathews said, “The financial ecosystem necessary to support the development of future global tech industry leaders requires a wide range of financing from ‘seed’ through ‘early stage’ through ‘later stage’ to achieve financial self sufficiency and business success, with job growth."

The Venture Capital Blueprint

As outlined, the Venture Capital Blueprint presents different mechanisms and models for consideration, leading to  best practice option "D":

     A)  Select an internationally respected private sector VC firm to establish and manage a ‘Fund-of-Funds’ structure which will then use its own processes and best judgment to choose the best Canadian VC managers with which  it should invest the Crown monies, who will be expected to complete their fund raising from both private sources and existing ‘Quasi-public’ and ‘Public’ Funds .

     B)  Invest the monies through the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) using its existing ‘Fund-of-Funds’ operations, with BDC placing it with a number of top selected VC funds across Canada looking for investment monies, through a competitive process. Successful fund managers (GPs) would be expected to raise at least the equivalent amount to the Crown’s contribution from private investors, plus additional amounts from ‘Quasi-public’ and ‘Public’ funds.

     C)  Having in mind that there are reportedly about 20 existing situations where Canadian fund managers are seeking additional investment capital to complete planned new VC funds, the government could assign the $400M to Industry Canada or Finance to be ‘doled out’ directly to Canadian funds which apply, against a qualification check list, thereby assisting those presently incomplete VC funds seeking investment.

     D) Implement a ‘Yozma Inspired’ approach with additional Canadian elements to carry out an international competitive process to select the top three or four proposals from partnerships of  Canadian and Foreign investors that would attract significant additional international capital and talent into Canada, employing BDC as the government’s investment channel in a ‘Fund-of-Funds’ structure.

Reid & Mathews, pointed out that “unless we take this opportunity to rethink Canada’s approach (i.e, adopt the international best practice "D" option)  to attracting venture investment and build an ongoing VC capability and scale able to build and sustain Canadian technology companies through their various growth stages, we will have not achieved much more than a short-term-fix to the VC sector, perpetuating the classic ‘vicious circle’ within which both our VC industry and tech sector industries are now trapped."

They concluded, “This is why it is so important that the opportunity created by Budget 2012 to attract foreign investment and expertise not be missed. To do otherwise we leave new tech start-ups now and at their later growth stages in the infamous Valley of Death.”

The social networking panel also included Jacob Glick, senior policy counsel Canada, Google Canada, Ken King, director telco & media convergence, SAS Institute and Keith McArthur, vice president social media, Rogers Communications Inc.

"We are finding that 50-percent of smart phones are actually connecting to Facebook every hour of every day, which perhaps is not surprising when you see Facebook icons on the home pages of most websites," said Dave Caputo, CEO, Sandvine.  "Facebook is a highly valued application with predictable data volumes that require a minimum amount of bandwidth.  This is the perfect scenario to implement tiered service plans that offer price certainty for subscribers and cost certainty for service providers."

Sandvine's network data is derived from a selection of their 200-plus communication service provider customers and aggregated in semiannual Global Internet Phenomena reports.  Sandvine's customers get the benefit of similar detailed network data reports to monitor the traffic trends on their networks, both on an ad hoc and pre-configured basis.

"Sandvine is an example of a vendor devoted to serving the global communication service provider community whose solutions can help its customer implement business intelligence tailored to their needs," said Jeff Cotrupe, Global Program Director, ACEM and OSSCS, Stratecast | Frost & Sullivan.

Kobo Writing Life Delivers Best-in-Class Open, Collaborative Self-Publishing Portal

$

NEW YORK CITY, NY (Book Expo America), June 5, 2012 /CNW/ - Kobo Inc., a global leader in eReading, today introduced its self-publishing portal Kobo Writing Life for independent authors and publishers. Designed to help writers become the best authors and publishers possible, Kobo Writing Life offers key reader insights and marketing tools to engage with fans on a global scale.

Another step in the company's focus and support of open standards, Kobo Writing Life uses industry standard ePub files giving readers more flexibility to choose on what computer, smartphone or eReading device they want to read the self-published titles. At no cost to the author, Kobo Writing Life titles are published easily using a revolutionary self-service portal in minutes. The platform is designed to put the power of all aspects of publishing - from price setting to advertising to marketing - in the hands of the writers helping them to maximize sales.

"When we started working on Kobo Writing Life, the first thing we did was ask authors what they felt was most important in a self-publishing platform," said Michael Tamblyn, EVP Content & Merchandising, Kobo. "They were incredibly clear: openness, control, great royalties, incredible reporting and global reach. It should be powerful but drop-dead simple. And there should be people running it who care about writers -- not like dropping your treasured manuscript into a machine. We can't wait to see what authors will do with this."

Unlike competitive self-publishing tools, Kobo allows authors to set their book price to "FREE" at any time without restrictive exclusive agreements, in addition Kobo pays 10% higher royalties on sales in many growing international markets and allows authors much more freedom on pricing. The company's focus on Social Reading will also give authors the opportunity to connect with readers through its Kobo Author Notes program enabling writers to provide commentary within the book for readers to enjoy as well as through Kobo's free apps, integrated with Facebook Timeline.

"Kobo has designed an intuitive dashboard that is easy to use and loaded with features important to me as an author," said Bella Andre, best-selling author of the Sullivan series. "The ability to see the performance of my books across different markets helps me to understand how my advertising and promotions are influencing sales so that I can engage with more readers around the world."

"Self-publishing is an important way for even established authors to strengthen a personal relationship with fans by offering them new or backlist titles that might not be suitable for large-scale print publishing," said Kevin J. Anderson, New York Times bestselling author. "The technology behind platforms like Kobo Writing Life is offering ways for writers to reach specific audiences easily. Some books are suitable for release by a major publisher, while others are better suited to a targeted approach."

Kobo Writing Life, currently being tested by 50 authors in its beta program, will be available in English at the end of June for the more than 1,600 authors already signed up. VANCOUVER, June 4, 2012 /CNW/ - Destiny Media Technologies (TSXV: DSY) (OTCQX: DSNY), the global standard for the secure distribution of pre-release music to radio, is pleased to announce the successful soft launch of Play MPE® version 5.  The new website (http://www.plaympe.com) and Mac, PC and 'Direct to Web' versions of the player software were made available beginning on May 15th.  iPhone, iPad, Android, Android Tablet and Blackberry versions are under development.

A team of developers began development on this major initiative in 2010, with a goal to expand usage.  Demand for the new player suite was driven by a need to better accommodate new geographies and new recipient types, such as press.  Following this launch, the company will be rolling the service out into new territories including major markets such as Germany, Japan and Indonesia.

Mark Moroney, VP Production Universal Music Group International speaks to their plans for further global roll out.  "We've always liked the powerful feature set of Play MPE® that enables us to deliver promotional music globally in a timely and secure manner.  However, with the proliferation of commercial music streaming services, the end user interface of Play MPE® had become dated. We worked closely with Play MPE® to completely re-design both the interface and feature set, based on feedback from our recipients (mainly radio stations and journalists). We're extremely pleased with the new player and think it will enable us to further reduce our physical promotional CD distribution."

Play MPE® Player 5 was designed with the cloud concept in mind to reflect the way our users are accessing the system. Whether at their main PC, on the road, at their home office, or using one of the Play MPE mobile apps, their experience will be consistent. Account-wide features like flags, notes, streaming playlist, and usage history have been introduced. Some of the other new features are: improved player controls, one-click playback from alert emails and one-step downloading, improved and expanded account settings, and the ability to choose themed skins.

The player software and Play MPE® 'Direct to Web' player-less access are available in twenty seven languages and the new user interface brings the music, videos and album art to the front page, giving users a quick, simple experience to listen. Patented locking and watermarking technologies continue to protect the content from piracy. With Player 5, Play MPE® continues to offer the best file format choice in the industry. Users can download WAV, MP3, WMA, AAC, Ogg, or MP2 in the bitrates of their choice and they can also conveniently burn a CD and print a matching CD inlay.
